Matte & gloss glaze mugs: finish, care and order questions

How do I choose between a matte and a gloss glaze for one mug range?

Choose by how the range is presented: both are fired glaze finishes that sit on the same ceramic, stoneware or bone china body, and gloss reflects light where matte breaks it up, so the two read differently on a shelf and in product photography. Confirm the sheen on a physical sample rather than on screen, since fired glaze shifts under shop lighting.

Can matte and gloss glaze be ordered on all four capacities?

Yes, the finish runs on the 8oz, 11oz, 15oz and 20oz bodies in ceramic, stoneware and bone china. Surface area and curve change with the body, so glaze coverage and how the colour reads are judged on the sample for the size and material you order. Capacity and material are fixed in the brief before artwork is prepared.

Why does a Pantone reference read differently on matte glaze than on gloss?

A matte surface scatters light instead of reflecting it, so the same reference reads flatter, with less highlight, than it does on a gloss body. Colours are matched to your Pantone or PMS reference and judged on a fired piece, then confirmed on a physical sample that becomes the acceptance standard. We do not promise a zero colour difference.

Can a printed logo and a glaze finish be combined on one mug?

Yes. Logo print and full-wrap print both run alongside the glaze finish, so a matte or gloss body can still carry your artwork. Print position and coverage are checked against your file before sampling, and how the print reads on the fired surface is judged on the physical piece.

Can a digital mockup show how the sheen will look?

No. A mockup comes back about one hour after a complete brief and shows layout, placement and colour on your chosen body, but it is a flat render and cannot show how the fired surface handles light. Approve the sheen on the physical sample, which ships 7–10 days after artwork approval and has its fee credited to production.

Will daily café washing wear the glaze surface?

The glaze is fired onto the body, so hot water and detergent do not strip it. What sets the care instruction is the decoration applied over it: underglaze print, decal and laser engraving are rated for daily use, while a gold rim should be hand washed gently, with no strong dishwasher cycle and no steel wool. Tell us your wash routine in the brief.

Can the matte and gloss versions be combined to reach the 500-piece minimum?

Yes. Both count as the same glaze decoration on one body, and the 500 pcs minimum is per design with mixed designs and colours combining toward that tier. Two colourways of one shape, one matte and one gloss, can therefore share a single run, with the split agreed in the brief and confirmed in the quotation.

Does the glaze colour change the piece price at 500 pieces?

The published tiers are $2.50 per piece at 500, $2.20 at 3,000 and $2.00 at 10,000, FOB Liling, and they cover a standard 11oz ceramic body with single-side print and standard export packing. A glaze colour, another capacity or retail packing is priced from your confirmed specification, so the rate follows the brief. Freight, duty and tooling are excluded.

How should glaze mugs be packed for a retail shelf or gift program?

Gift box, retail carton and inner tray are all available, and the packing is sampled in the same batch as the mug so the fit is tested on the real body. Each piece sits in an inner tray inside the export carton, and drop testing is part of the written QC plan. A photo QC report is issued before the container leaves.

What happens if a glaze program lands in the August to November peak?

That is the tightest window in Liling, so the production slot should be booked before artwork is final. Bulk production runs 30–45 days after sample approval, the physical sample takes 7–10 days after artwork approval, and sea freight adds about 30 days. Plan backwards from your in-store date rather than forwards from the order.
